Protection Assistant – Psychosocial Support (Social Work)
Founded in 1956, The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is a humanitarian, non-governmental, non-profit organization providing direct assistance to conflict-affected populations – refugees, internally displaced people (IDPs), and host communities – in more than 40 countries around the world.
DRC has been actively involved in emergency response projects in Tanzania since 2015, focusing on the Burundi refugee crisis in three camps in the Kigoma Region. The organization’s integrated projects cover sectors such as Camp Coordination and Camp Management (CCCM), Protection (CBP, PSN, GBV, CP, and Legal), Shelter and Infrastructure, and Economic Recovery.
Overall Purpose of the Role: The Protection Assistant – Psychosocial Support (Social Work) will operate under the direct supervision of the Protection Team Leader and the guidance support of the Protection Coordinator. Based in Kasulu/Kibondo, the role involves regular field visits to host villages near Nyarugusu and Nduta refugee camps. The Social Worker (Psychosocial Support) will collaborate with various stakeholders to achieve program goals, with a specific focus on Child Friendly Space (CFS) activities.
Main Responsibilities:
Supervision of Child Protection and PSS Activities:
- Supervise child protection and psychosocial support (PSS) activities in Child Friendly Space (CFS), ensuring timely implementation and goal achievement.
- Organize and facilitate capacity building and supervision of community structures within the community.
- Assist in facilitating parents and community meetings for child protection clubs (CPCs).
- Screen for and monitor protection needs and gaps in and around the CFS.
- Ensure the participation of all groups of children, especially those with disabilities.
- Conduct interviews with children and families to assess and review their protection concerns.
Outreach and Awareness:
- Conduct outreach and awareness activities to identify and facilitate assistance to vulnerable children at the village level.
- Ensure case management referral procedures and standards are met and followed.
- Collaborate with other team members in the implementation of project activities.
Data Collection and Reporting:
- Track, maintain, update, and analyze data on activity and indicators with support from the Information Management Officer.
- Prepare and submit timely and quality weekly, monthly, and other donor reports as per requirements.
- Support and work closely with the Child Protection Information Management Officer and M&E on program data collection.
Logistics Duties:
- Take care of equipment and supplies for the job.
- Ensure working equipment is in good condition and replenish/repair when necessary.
- Report immediately any security incidents/issues detected in the DRC premises.
Experience and Technical Competencies:
- At least 1 year of professional experience in PSS, Protection, Social work in humanitarian or development programming.
- Demonstrates a good understanding of mental health and psychosocial support practices.
- Experience in designing, managing, monitoring, and evaluating child protection programs in emergency, transition, and development contexts.
- Ability to identify the main gaps in child protection to inform a holistic response.
- Good knowledge of and experience in using established inter-agency standards and guidelines in child protection.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences or a related technical field from a recognized college or university (preferred).
Languages:
- Proficiency in written and spoken English and Swahili. Kirundi is an added advantage.
