Position: Gender and Safeguarding Coordinator

Location: Lusaka, Zambia, with frequent travel to the field

Grade: 3

Child Safeguarding: Level 3

Role Purpose: As the Gender and Safeguarding Coordinator for Save the Children International in Zambia, I will oversee and strengthen gender and safeguarding initiatives across all thematic areas of the organization’s country programming. Collaborating with various stakeholders, my role aims to promote gender equality, integrate safeguarding measures, and ensure the safety and well-being of children, partners, and the organization.

Key Responsibilities:

Gender:

  1. Coordination and Representation:
    • Coordinate gender technical resources from the Country Office, Regional Office, and strategic gender partners.
    • Collaborate with peers, partners, and participate in relevant gender working groups within ministries to achieve thematic outcomes.
  2. Capacity Building:
    • Ensure all staff receive orientation on gender equality in Save the Children’s programming context.
    • Support Country Office teams in integrating gender equality strategies into program/project objectives and initiatives.
  3. Programming & MEAL:
    • Support Country Offices and partners in designing and implementing quality programs that are gender-sensitive and ensure gender equality.
    • Identify gender-related funding opportunities and participate in donor meetings as required.
  4. Advocacy, Communication, and Media (ACCM):
    • Act as SCI Zambia’s spokesperson for gender-related issues, engaging with the media and stakeholders.

Safeguarding:

  1. Training and Capacity Building:
    • Identify and address training needs of staff and stakeholders related to keeping children safe.
    • Implement SCI’s four-pillared approach to safeguarding – Prevention, Awareness, Reporting, and Response.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • University degree in social sciences or a relevant subject.
  • Minimum five years in capacity building and technical assistance provision to Government and NGOs.
  • Experience in child protection/child safeguarding practice, including work with vulnerable children.
  • Knowledge of gender and power analysis such as GEM.
  • In-depth understanding of children’s issues in Zambia and a commitment to Children’s Rights.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
