VisionFund International is embarking on a strategic initiative to leverage insurance tools and techniques, creating financial safety nets for the poor. Targeting VF borrowers, World Vision beneficiaries, and other partners’ beneficiaries, this initiative aims to prevent individuals from falling back into poverty during unforeseen shocks.

This role focuses on ensuring the successful delivery of insurance operations in the Africa region. The responsibilities involve project management, stakeholder coordination, and technical design of insurance solutions. The successful candidate will drive the pragmatic implementation of insurance solutions, creating affordable financial safety nets for borrowers and beneficiaries.

Major Responsibilities

Integration of insurance within MFIs, WV, and other partners

  • Develop and ensure smooth implementation and integration of insurance activities into VisionFund’s, World Vision’s, and other partners’ existing operations.
  • Advise and specify teams’ skills for all kinds of insurance business management.
  • Advocate for change to senior stakeholders, guiding staff, volunteers, and clients through the implementation journey for cost-effective and efficient insurance product offerings.

Insurance Business Development

  • Coordinate the analysis of insurance client needs in branches and APs to define products serving their needs.
  • Enhance awareness of the potential for all insurance products within the region through the development of clear insurance ambitions for each country.
  • Drive business case analysis for different insurance product types within MFIs and WV NOs.

Insurance Product Development

  • Ensure insurance product design activities within VFI conclude practically and cost-effectively by gathering qualitative and quantitative data.
  • Drive practical solutions that work for VisionFund, World Vision, and the impoverished, involving inputs from other specialists and diverse stakeholders.

Reporting

  • Prepare reports for VisionFund Insurance Operations Director.
  • Assist local management in reporting to their boards on key insurance projects.
  • Ensure the quality of reports for Insurance program implementation.

Training and Writing of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

  • Conduct and deliver training for staff dealing with insurance, identifying talent and potential successors for this role.
  • Contribute to training curriculum development to raise awareness of insurance among clients and enable staff to sell insurance products.

Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies

Required Professional Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, economics, international relations, accounting, or a relevant subject.
  • Minimum of 10 years of work experience, including at least 5 years in business development in SME/micro-banking, insurance, or microfinance.
  • 1-2 years of experience in partnership distribution.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in developing countries managing insurance projects, with 2 years of cross-country experience.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills.
  • Hands-on, “can-do” approach with a track record of achieving results working remotely.
  • Excellent interpersonal and influencing skills, including cross-culturally.
  • Clear communicator with excellent presentation and negotiation skills.

Preferred Knowledge and Qualifications

  • Technical insurance qualifications are a significant added plus.
  • Experience in a health insurance company would be a clear asset.
  • Masters or MBA preferred.

Travel, Work, and Language Requirements

  • Ability and willingness to work with remote team members in multiple countries.
  • Travel to the field may include remote rural locations.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills in English.
