The Ideal Candidate

The Executive Director will set strategy and vision, build the organizations culture, lead the management team, and allocate resources appropriately. Working with the Board, the Executive Director will set important goals for the organization and work systematically to meet them.

The Executive Director will define the organizations priorities and direction. S/he will assess and evaluate strategies, decide how the organization will differentiate itself from peer organizations, and will hire teams, set budgets, forge alliances and build partnerships to further the organizations goals. The Executive Director will play a formative role in building the culture of organization around its core values to attract and retain the best talent. The Executive Director will ensure the team receives appropriate training, mentoring and capacity building. The Executive Director will actively promote the organization to build its financial reserves and goodwill. S/he will secure resources, budget and allocate resources appropriately and be accountable for the financial health of the organization.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

The Executive Director will:

  • Provide managerial, strategic and technical leadership of the organization.
  • Define overall strategy and work plan, in collaboration with the Board.
  • Work closely with the Board of Directors and committees, informing, assessing, and addressing issues that affect the organization.
  • Communicate vision, mission and strategy internally and externally to stakeholders.
  • Develop and oversee operational and administrative policies and procedures of the organization ensuring operational integrity and established service levels are maintained.
  • Develop and review organizational policies, systems and standards for appropriateness, effectiveness and make updates as needed.
  • Provide financial and programmatic oversight, including partner and donor deliverables, reporting, work plans, budgets and auditing.
  • Manage the relationship with the main strategic and funding partners ensuring institutional alignment of agreed priorities and work plans.
  • Manage GLAMI’s budget and ensure that it is financially viable, sustainable and with the resources to meet current and projected program
  • Engage in fundraising and developing revenue streams.
  • Oversee monitoring of key activities, performance indicators and targets and analyze performance achieved against set targets and recommend corrective action, as appropriate.
  • Ensure preparation of effective, high quality periodic reports and proposals.
  • Champion change and innovation and drive continuous improvement initiatives within the organization.
  • Build and maintain a strong brand and positive image ensuring the mission, programs and services are presented in a consistent and strong manner to relevant stakeholders.
  • Oversee marketing and other communication efforts and serve as the primary spokesperson for the organization.
  • Build a high-performing management team and play an active role in attracting, retaining and developing high-caliber staff.
  • Provide ongoing leadership of the organization and ensure targets are met by setting aspirations, providing resources and controlling progress and leading and supporting/coaching leadership team/individual team members.
  • Ensure human resource capacity and appropriate management structures and policies are developed and employees are held accountable for delivering outcomes.
  • Conduct periodic performance reviews of team members and ensure agreed personal development plans are implemented.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with various organizations and key stakeholders including Board members, local and regional authorities, central and local government authorities, funding partners and leverage the same to strategically enhance organization’s mission.
  • Serve as the face of the organization and actively participate in external events with the aim of increasing visibility, credibility and brand in the market while developing strategic partnerships in order to increase community awareness and expand the organization reach.
  • Ensure compliance with all requirements defined/established by Government regulators, oversight bodies and partners.
  • Provide timely problems and dispute resolution.
  • Ensure safety of operations and employees by protecting employee and organization’s interests.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors.

General Responsibilities

Board Governance

  • Responsible for leading organization in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s mission as defined by the Board of Directors.
  • Responsible for preparing, in consultation with the Board Chairperson, the agenda for meetings of the Board and taking and presenting minutes of all meetings.
  • Responsible for communicating effectively with the Board and providing timely and accurate information necessary for the Board to function effectively and to make informed decisions.
  • Inform the Board regularly of internal organization matters, including relevant staffing, funding and programme success and priorities.
  • Responsible for ensuring that Board activities are well-organized and funded.
  • Assist with identifying prospective candidates, recruiting and training board members i.e. induction and onboarding, ongoing training/familiarization of organizational policies and activities.
  • Serve as liaison between Board and staff

Financial Performance and Viability

  • Responsible for fundraising and developing other sources of revenue necessary to support organization’s mission.
  • Responsible for the fiscal integrity of organization to include submission to the Board of a proposed annual budget and financial statements, which accurately reflect the financial condition of the organization.
  • Responsible for publishing periodic audited financial statements.
  • Responsible for fiscal management that generally anticipates operating within the approved budget, ensures effective resource utilization, and maintenance of the organization in a positive financial position.

Organization Mission and Strategy

  • Responsible for implementation of organization’s programs that carry out the organization’s mission.
  • Responsible for strategic planning to ensure that the organization can successfully fulfill its mission in the future.
  • Responsible for the enhancement of organization’s image by being active and visible in the community and by working closely with other non-governmental, civil society and private organizations.
  • Responsible for modeling organizational values and culture.
  • Ensures all staff are oriented to all organization’s policies and mission
  • Ensures organization managers align work objectives and goals to mission and strategic objectives
  • Responsible for creating partnerships and managing relationships with external stakeholders and other organizations of similar goals on girls empowerment and mentorship.

Organization Operations

  • Responsible for hiring and retention of competent, qualified staff.
  • Responsible for effective administration of organization’s operations.
  • With board guidance, responsible for signing all legal agreements and other instruments made and entered into and on behalf of the organization.
  • Responsible for employee welfare and ensuring fair and consistent treatment of staff.

Project Management

  • Manage project staff, consultants and volunteers across locations and team, ensuring a “one mission’ approach.
  • Ensure team efforts are coordinated and conducted according to plan, including ensuring resource input, in order to achieve project goals.
  • Ensure program monitoring, evaluation and learning especially, to ascertain program achievements, and attained impact.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Education

  • University degree required (masters degree or equivalent preferred) in business and public administration, economics, finance, law, social science or other related fields.

Experience

  • Experience of 7 – 10 years of progressively responsible experience in business, project or development management, administration or related area.
  • Experience leading teams, programs or projects at a senior level.
  • Experience working across multiple sectors, including nonprofit, public and corporate environments.
  • Experience in building teams and managing conflicts.
  • Experience and skill in working with a Board of Directors.
  • Strong technical, program management skills.
  • Experience working with the government, civil society organizations, NGOs and private sector organizations.
  • A track record of successfully generating new revenue streams and improving financial results.
  • Excellent donor relations skills and understanding of the local and international funding community.
  • Previous success in establishing relationships with individuals and organizations of influence including funders, partner agencies and volunteers.
  • Organizational skills including planning, delegating, program development and task management.
  • Strong financial management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision making and reporting.
  • Creative, innovative and strategic thinker.
  • Excellent interpersonal and cross-cultural skills
