Joe Biden makes history by picking transgender doctor as assistant health secretary

By picking a transgender doctor for a top government health post, incoming President Joe Biden has made history. If her nomination is approved by the U.S. Senate, Rachel Levine is expected to serve as assistant secretary of health, becoming the first trans official ever confirmed by senators if so. Biden admitted that she was a 'historical' pick when she revealed plans for Levine's appointment but added that that the medic was a ‘deeply qualified choice to help lead our administration’s health efforts.’

He added: ‘Dr. Rachel Levine will bring the steady leadership and essential expertise we need to get people through this pandemic  no matter their zip code, race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability and meet the public health needs of our country in this critical moment and beyond.’

Levine is currently serving as the State of Pennsylvania's health secretary, having been named to the position in 2017 by Penn State Governor Tom Wolf.
