Position Description:

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the Open Cast mining operation in compliance with Tanzanian Mining Regulations and Barrick Health Safety and Environmental requirements.
  • Ensure adherence to safety standards and achieve Zero Lost Time Injury (LTI) Frequency Rate.
  • Develop and implement mine plans for optimum ore exploitation.
  • Oversee ore delivery to the ROM stockpile in a cost-effective and timely manner.
  • Collaborate with Engineering and MRM managers for equipment utilization and ore reserve management.
  • Implement monitoring systems to minimize mining costs and address variations.
  • Foster a working environment for skills development and employee potential.
  • Continuously review mine operations for value addition and shareholder wealth.
  • Lead in industry committees, government meetings, and community engagement.
  • Manage succession planning and employee performance within the Mining Team.
  • Promote operational safety, resource utilization, and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure compliance with the Company Code of Ethics and Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) standards.
  • Take accountability for the effectiveness of the environmental management system.

Qualification Requirements:

  • Degree in Mining Engineering or similar Technical Degree with practical mining experience.
  • Mining operation management and strategic planning skills.
  • Proficiency in mining equipment performance and contractor management.
  • Post-tertiary qualification and membership in relevant professional bodies.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Team player with a result-oriented mindset.
  • Valid Tanzanian driving license.
  • Awareness of Mines Health & Safety Act.

Experience and Competencies Needed:

  • 15 years’ experience in the mining industry, with at least 7 years in operational leadership.
  • Good knowledge of mining safety regulations and best practices.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and motivate teams to achieve company goals.
  • Strong time management and interpersonal skills.
  • Budgeting, managerial, and business improvement experience.
  • Proficiency in project management, governance, and strategic planning.
  • Understanding of finance, economics, and systems development.

About the Team:

The North Mara gold mine is located in north-west Tanzania in the Tarime district of the Mara region. It is around 100 kilometres east of Lake Victoria and 20 kilometres south of the Kenyan border.

North Mara started commercial production in 2002. The mine is a combined open pit and underground operation from two deposits, Gokona (underground) and Nyabirama (open pit). The process plant has the capacity to process an average of 8,000 tonnes of ore per day.
