Overview:

The East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP), also known as the Uganda–Tanzania Crude Oil Pipeline (UTCOP), is a significant project spanning 1,443 km. The pipeline, in planning since 2013, aims to transport crude oil from Uganda’s Tilenga and Kingfisher oil fields to the Port of Tanga, Tanzania, on the Indian Ocean. It is a collaborative effort with stakeholders including TotalEnergies, China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), Uganda’s National Oil Company (UNOC), and the Tanzanian government.

Current Status:

The project has faced challenges, with ownership distributed among TotalEnergies (65%), UNOC (15%), Tanzania (15%), and CNOOC (5%). The project’s cost has risen to $5 billion, and financing remains uncertain as of June 2023, with only two banks, Standard Bank (through Stanbic Uganda) and the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, continuing to advise on the project.

Project Features:

Once completed, EACOP will stand as the longest electrically heated crude oil pipeline globally. However, its development has been met with concerns due to large-scale displacement, threats to water resources, and environmental impact, leading to protests and activism.
