Position: Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

Location: Masaki, Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania

Experience: Experience and success in revenue generation, with an emphasis on raising funds from multilateral and bilateral aid agencies, foundations, and corporations. Revenue generation will be a key responsibility of the CEO.

Familiarity: with biodiversity conservation issues, climate change mitigation and adaptation, conservation finance, protected area management and related issues.

Education: Advanced degree in a field relevant to the work of the Trust (natural resource/environmental management, biological/ecological sciences, business, nonprofit management).

Preference: Tanzanian citizen or resident with long term engagement in conservation in Tanzania

Budget: Highly Competitive

Job Summary

On behalf of our client, we are recruiting a Chief Executive Officer (CEO), to head the Trust’s Secretariat and oversee the day-to-day operations of the Trust under the authority of the Board of Trustees. The CEO is the senior-most employee of the Trust, responsible for planning, budgeting, revenue generation, compliance and fiscal accountability, oversight of grantmaking and evaluation, and the maintenance of a respectful professional environment. The position is full-time, with an initial commitment of three years; an attractive compensation package will be provided, commensurate with experience.

Client Background

The Trust is a newly established nationwide non-profit independent institution whose purpose is “to serve as a catalyst for mobilizing long-term sustainable financing for conservation of biodiversity, sustainable use of natural resources, mitigation of and adaptation to climate change challenges and the relief of distress to the public due to pressure on critical ecosystems and landscapes in Tanzania or otherwise affecting the people of Tanzania.”

Responsibilities

The CEO oversees the day-to-day operations of the Trust and ensures its viability by offering clear value to clients, funders, civil society partners, and the government. Specific responsibilities include:

Operations

  • Overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Secretariat.
  • Ensuring the integrity of the Trust’s financial operations, including grantmaking, procurement, investment, and reporting.

Strategy & Planning

  • Engaging in long and medium-term strategy development.
  • Developing annual and multi-year plans and budgets.
  • Preparing regular reports to the Board.

Financial Viability/Sustainability

  • Leading in identifying potential clients/funders and markets for the Trust’s services.
  • Ensuring the Trust employs a competent chief financial officer.
  • Ensuring policies related to Conflict of Interest, self-dealing, and related policies are consistently implemented.

Grantmaking

  • Ensuring the Trust has credible, efficient, and accountable grantmaking policies and systems.
  • Ensuring the Trust’s relationship with grantees is professional and respectful.

Personnel

  • Overseeing senior personnel and ensuring the Trust maintains a respectful work environment.
  • Ensuring compliance with Tanzanian labor law.

Communications & Representation

  • Serving as the chief spokesperson for the Trust.
  • Representing the Trust in meetings with various stakeholders.

Reputation & Risk

  • Maintaining the Trust’s reputation for integrity and accountability.
  • Keeping apprised of best practices within the conservation community.

Other Duties

  • Performing duties specified by the Board of Trustees.

Qualifications

  • Commitment to the mission and aims of the Trust.
  • At least 5 years of experience in a senior leadership position.
  • Advanced degree in a relevant field.
  • Demonstrated skill and success in revenue generation.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience working with international aid and development agencies.
