Shinyanga Region is one of Tanzania's 31 administrative regions. The regional capital is the municipality of Shinyanga. According to the 2012 national census, the region had a population of 1,534,808. For 2002-2012, the region's 2.1 percent average annual population growth rate was the twentieth highest in the country. It was also the tenth most densely populated region with 81 people per square kilometer. With a size of 50,781 square kilometers (19,607 sq mi), the region is slightly smaller than Costa Rica (51,100 square kilometers (19,700 sq mi)).

Location
Shinyanga is located in Shinyanga District, in Shinyanga Region, in northern Tanzania. The city is located approximately 175 kilometers (109 mi), by road, southeast of Mwanza, the nearest large city. This location lies approximately 475 kilometers (295 mi), by road, northwest of Dodoma, the capital city of Tanzania. The coordinates of the city are 3°39′43″S 33°25′23″E / 3.661945°S 33.423056°E / -3.661945; 33.423056.
Shinyanga, also known as Shinyanga Mjini in the local Swahili language, is a city in northern Tanzania. The city is the location of the regional headquarters of Shinyanga Region as well as the district headquarters of Shinyanga Urban District. The region and district are named after the town.
The region is bordered to the north by the Mwanza, Mara, and Kagera Regions and to the south by the Tabora Region. Kigoma Region borders to the west, and the Simiyu Region to the east.
Population
The 2002 national census estimated the population of Shinyanga at about 93,000. The 2012 national census listed the population of Shinyanga Municipal Council at 161,391.
