Founded in 1956, DRC is a humanitarian, non-governmental, non-profit organization providing direct assistance to conflict-affected populations in over 40 countries. In Tanzania, DRC has been implementing emergency response projects since the onset of the Burundi refugee crisis in 2015. DRC’s projects cover various sectors, including Camp Coordination and Camp Management (CCCM), Protection (CBP, PSN, GBV, CP, and Legal), Shelter and Infrastructure, and Economic Recovery.
Overall Purpose of the Role:
The Empowerment Assistant, based in Nduta/Nyarugusu refugee camp or host community (depending on programmatic needs), will work under the direct supervision of the GBV Team Leader and the guidance of the Protection Coordinator. The role involves supporting the quality and timely implementation of GBV activities in compliance with DRC standards in the assigned refugee camp.
Main Responsibilities:
- Conduct women/Men empowerment activities in line with guidelines, feedback, and consultations.
- Identify and recruit adolescent girls/boys age 10-19 for Girl/Boy Shine activities.
- Recruit and train Girl/Boy Shine Mentors and facilitate the Life Skills curriculum.
- Enroll participants in different identified activities and monitor activities at women’s centers.
- Empower women/Men in leadership roles, decision-making, and leadership learning.
- Participate in the design, planning, and development of women/Men empowerment program work plans.
- Work with GBV Prevention and Advocacy Officer for needs/interest assessments and feedback.
- Ensure the enhancement, utilization, and scaling of innovation and women/Men participation.
- Develop and support professional, effective, and appropriate GBV psychosocial programming.
- Engage with women leaders, women/Men groups, adolescent girls/boys’ groups, and peers support.
- Adhere to GBV guiding principles, conducting activities in a safe, secure, and dignified manner.
- Promote timely referral and GBV services information in women/men center activities.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with relevant stakeholders.
- Integrate GBV critical knowledge and service information in every women/men activity.
- Collect and report data in collaboration with the GBVIMs Officer.
Experience and Technical Competencies:
- Minimum 1 to 2 years’ experience in a GBV-related position in a humanitarian response.
- Technical understanding of core protection concepts, prevention, and response strategies.
- Experience in developing and strengthening service mapping, referral pathways, and safety audits.
- Strong analytical skills and hands-on experience in emergency and first-line response.
- Initiative, integrity, and strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel.
- University degree in social sciences, law, social work, international development, or a relevant field.
- Fluent in written and spoken English and Swahili; Kirundi is an advantage.
