Geotechnical Engineer
North Mara Gold Mine Limited is seeking to recruit a Geotechnical Engineer to join our team. The successful candidate for this position is expected to align to the Barrick DNA and drive a change within his team and the business and on a practical note will ensure activities are effectively planned and undertaken in a safe and cost effective manner to achieve targets in accordance to NGML Mining Safety Standards, Policies and Procedures.
Reporting to: Senior Geotechnical Engineer.
Work Schedule: Rotation Status (6 Weeks on 3 Weeks off)
Contract Duration: Permanent.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Participate-in and provide a strong contribution to the site safety and environment culture.
- Ensure the works are performed in accordance with approved Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), Supervising and coaching of technicians.
- Maintain an ongoing program of geological and geotechnical mapping across all active pits.
- Monitor and report on pit wall movements, inclusive of analysis of all data from radars and survey prisms placed about pits.
- Design, coordinate, implement and supervise geotechnical drilling programs.
- Coordinate and supervise Field Technicians responsible for geotechnical sample collection, dispatch, core orientation and basic geotechnical logging.
- Ensure appropriate geotechnical logging and mapping quality control measures are in place, adhered to, monitored and reported on.
- Participate in the conversion of structural, lithological and geotechnical data into a 3D solid model format that can be incorporated into resource block models and deposit specific geological / geotechnical models.
- Ensuring Geotechnical staff is well trained to improve on the quality of services offered to the mining department and ensure compliance with NGML’s policies and procedures.
- Coaching and training of employees will be a distinct advantage.
- Liaising with external mining consultants.
- Collecting, analysing and reporting of geotechnical data.
- Ensure geotechnical test work samples are taken / prepared to the highest standard prior to dispatch for analysis.
- Participate in the writing, compilation, editing and completion of geotechnical reports.
- Reporting in writing on geotechnical analyses, risk assessments and inspections.
- Assist in developing training programs for Tanzanian Engineers to develop new skills and achieve their full potential.
- Undertake Geotechnical monitoring programs to evaluate risk associated with rock slopes
- Regularly update the Ground Control Management Plan (GCMP) so as to improve the quality of service offered to the mining department.
- Ensure geotechnical test work samples are taken / prepared to the highest standard prior to dispatch for analysis.
- Assist the Geotechnical Section Leader to complete NGML’s employee performance management processes to ensure optimum employee performance and take appropriate action to remedy any substandard employee performance or behaviour.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor Degree of Science in Mining Engineering or Engineering Geology
- Geological Engineering and or equivalent preferably with a specialization in Ground Control, Geotechnical Engineering or Rock Mechanics.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Three to five years of post-graduate experience with at least 3 years in geotechnical or project geologist roles.
- Experience in the collection, analysis and interpretation of geotechnical data.
- Practical knowledge of diamond drilling principles, combined with drill rig supervisory and geotechnical logging experience.
SKILLS / KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:
- Practical knowledge of Microsoft Office, Vulcan, Phase2, SLIDE, SURPAC, DIPS, SWEDGE and MapInfo software.
- Demonstrated people leadership + management skills and training.
- Familiarity with and commitment to, OH&S and Environmental Management best practice.
- Database Software package.
- A valid Driver’s License. Have good work ethic and be goal oriented.
- Ability to work under pressure.
- Current light vehicle driver’s licence.
- Practical knowledge of Microsoft Office software.ie Power point
- Familiarity with and commitment to HSE best practice.
- Highly organized, systematic and meticulous.
- Ability to work day and night shifts.
